Dr Riaz Rampuri is the lead clinician at Auris Ear Care, and the person who you will see at your appointment. In his 8 years of clinical experience as a doctor, he has treated over 4,500 private patients in their locations across London and the Home Counties.

Microsuction

What is microsuction?

‘Micro’ – because we use microscopes, ‘suction’ – because we use a finely calibrated suction device, to vacuum out the wax.

Our microsuction equipment is the best in class. We use Carl Zeiss optics and suction units designed and manufactured by DeVilBiss Healthcare, who are world leaders in the production of medical devices for ear cleaning.

Occasionally, when microsuction alone is not possible, we use a combination of fine instruments and eardrops; for example, in cases of impacted ear wax or foreign body removal.

The procedure will normally take a maximum of 30 minutes. The most you should feel is a gentle pulling sensation as your ear is being cleaned.
Why microsuction?

We only practice microsuction, which is the NHS gold-standard for ear wax removal and is supported by NICE guidance.

We are the UK’s first CQC regulated provider of microsuction for mobile ear wax removal in London.

Unlike ear candling, syringing or irrigation, microsuction ear wax removal has a significantly lower risk of causing damage to your eardrum. This is because the procedure is performed under direct vision and avoids the use of any liquids at high pressure.

Microsuction is also an important part of the treatment of swimmer’s ear, or otitis externa, which can cause discharge and itchy ears.

The ear canal is a highly sensitive structure measuring approximately 7mm in diameter and 25mm in length. With such a small cavity to work in, microsuction above other methods has proven to be safer, cleaner and better tolerated by our patients.

Once the procedure is complete, our patients notice an immediate relief of their symptoms and often an instant improvement in hearing, from the comfort of their home. No more blocked ears!

All about ear wax

Ear wax is the most common cause of blocked ears. Ear wax plays a very important part in protecting your ears; it is a substance that is secreted inside the ear canal and has cleansing, lubricating and antibacterial properties.

Your ears are self-cleaning, but occasionally this mechanism can fail. An excess amount of wax in your ears can lead to a feeling of blocked ears, itching, pain, hearing loss, dizziness and in some cases tinnitus. Cotton buds – often used to relieve irritation or itching – actually push the ear wax further down into the ear and make ear blockage worse. Hearing aids are also a common cause of impacted ear wax.

Auris Ear Care ear wax removal specialists use microsuction, considered to be the safest, cleanest and most efficient method of ear wax removal. The very definition of 21st century ear care: microsuction ear wax removal in London, at a time and place of your choosing with our innovative private mobile ear cleaning service.

What is ear wax? – link to page which answers question

Is microsuction painful?

No. Occasionally some people may experience mild sensitivity or discomfort.

I’ve had ear surgery in the past, is microsuction suitable?

Yes. Microsuction is the safest method of ear wax removal for people who have had grommets, tympanoplasty (eardrum repair) and/or mastoidectomy. We also treat patients with narrow ear canals, exostoses or canaloplasty.

Do you offer treatment for otitis externa (swimmers ear)?

Yes. Otitis externa is best treated with microsuction followed by a course of antibiotic or anti-fungal eardrops. Follow up appointments are offered in cases of severe infections, to ensure complete resolution. If your infection is resistant to antibiotics, we will take a microbiology ear swab and send your sample to a laboratory for further investigation.

How often should I get my ear wax removed?

There is no clinical evidence published on how often you should clean your ears, as the need for ear wax removal varies from person to person. Your ENT doctor will advise suitable scheduling after your first appointment.

If you suffer from tinnitus, please notify your clinician at the time of consent.
