Protecting you and our staff from the risk of COVID-19

In News by Arif Rampuri

Here at Auris, your safety is our first concern. We are in unprecedented times, and protecting you and our staff from the risk of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is a top priority.

We have taken a number of steps to ensure our services are our safe as possible, in line with guidance from the professional body representing Ear, Nose & Throat doctors, ENT-UK, as well as Public Health England:

  1. Screening questions

When confirming your appointment, we will ask you if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, particularly:

  • a high temperature
    • a new, continuous cough
    • a loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste

We are unable to offer ear wax removal services if you or anyone in your household is display these symptoms, or has done so within the last 14 days.

  • Staff temperature screening

Our staff are temperature screened and symptom-screened daily.

  • Masks  – for you and us!

Our staff will always be wearing a mask during your consultation. We will offer you a complimentary mask to wear during your consultation.

  • Gowns & gloves

Our staff wear latex-free fluid-resistant gowns and gloves during the microsuction procedure.

  • Alcohol gel/wipes

Alcohol gel effectively kills COVID-19. Our staff use alcohol gel before and after your procedure, and all equipment is wiped down with alcohol wipes before and after each patient.

  • Single-use equipment

We use as much single use equipment as possible to reduce the risk of virus transmission. Anything that comes into contact with a patient is disposable, including all suction pens, wax removal instruments and otoscope tips (a small funnel that goes into your ear canal).

Is wax removal a high-risk, “aerosol-generating procedure” procedure?

Essentially, no. If the eardrum is intact, the risk of spreading the virus is very low because the ear canal does not carry COVID-19 virus particles.

In the ENT-UK guidance published 25th May 2020, the authors stated:

“The external ear canal is not virus bearing….Micro-suction of the external ear canal therefore should not generate risk of COVID-19 transmission from the ear canal if the tympanic membrane is intact, and it is not considered an AGP [aerosol-generating procedure] with respect to COVID-19 transmission.”
