All about ear
foreign bodies & objects
It is usually straightforward to diagnose a foreign body. Our ENT doctor will examine your ear with a bright light to identify the object and work out the best way to safely remove it. With children, sometimes it is necessary for parents to hold their child so that they can be examined thoroughly.
It is very important that foreign bodies are removed promptly, before they cause damage to the ear. For children, it is important that an experienced ENT doctor performs this procedure because multiple unsuccessful attempts can result in your child becoming very distressed and refuse to cooperate. It’s important to get the object removed first time!
NB. Grommets are small plastic tubes surgically inserted into the eardrum by a surgeon to treat ear disease. When they naturally push out of the ear drum, they usually fall out of the ear canal by themselves, but sometimes a grommet can become a foreign body that needs to be removed.
Usually, once the foreign body has been removed from the ear canal, no further treatment is needed. Occasionally, if the foreign body has been in the ear for some time, the ear canal can become irritated or infected. This may require treatment with ear drops.

How to prevent objects getting stuck in your ears?
Objects such as cotton buds should never be inserted into the ear canal, and silicone ear plugs should be avoided as they can break apart deep inside the ear canal. Hearing aids should be checked for loose fitting parts regularly.
Prevention is the key when it comes to stopping your child putting something in the ear. Remove small objects including batteries from children’s play area and as early as possible, teach children not to stick stuff in their ears, noses or throats. We recommend a great children’s book by ENT doctor Jerald Altman & Richard Jacobson called “Don’t Stick Sticks Up Your Nose! Don’t Stuff Stuff in Your Ears!”

Ear Foreign Body & Object Removal
How do you remove an ear foreign body/object?
We use a combination of microsuction and manual instrumentation depending on the nature of the foreign body. Please see our 3d animation above which provides a procedural explanation.
Will the procedure hurt?
The procedure is normally pain free. If the foreign body has caused an ear infection, or its lodged deep in the ear canal, then removing it may cause a degree of sensitivity or pain.
What to avoid if you think you have an ear foreign body?
- Don’t use any instruments/tools inside your ear in attempt to remove it
- Don’t put any liquids inside the ear
- Don’t leave it in your ear as it may get infected
I have a grommet stuck in my ear, is it ok to remove?
Grommets in their correct position should not be removed. Grommets floating in the ear canal should be removed, as they serve no purpose in this position.
When do I seek emergency help?
If you have ear pain, or suspect a button battery or insect stuck in your ear you must seek medical attention immediately. Failure to do so, may result in a severe infection spreading into local structures.

Five-Star Rated Ear Care Experts
Despite the late hour, he was incredibly patient, reassuring, and thorough. He took the time to listen to our concerns, carefully assess our daughter, and explain everything clearly, which immediately put us at ease.
It is rare to come across someone who goes above and beyond not only as a doctor, but also as a compassionate human being.
We cannot thank him enough and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a caring, professional, and dedicated doctor. An absolute credit to his profession.
He took his time to explain everything he was doing, what had happened, why it may have happened and what the next steps would be. He never rushed her and made sure she felt as comfortable and reassured as possible. I really appreciated how patient and professional he was, especially when dealing with a nervous teenager. We felt very well looked after and I would definitely recommend Dr Riaz. Thank you so much for your patience and care!
I developed a badly blocked ear very quickly and was left with perhaps 30% of my normal hearing. It was extremely disruptive to everyday life. As I am severely physically disabled and use a powered wheelchair, even a relatively straightforward medical problem can add considerably to the restrictions I already face.
Around eight years ago my eardrum was perforated during NHS ear syringing using abnormally high pressure. Since then I have always had microsuction carried out at hospital. Before the pandemic, getting an appointment was never particularly difficult.
Last week I contacted the ENT department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and was told the waiting time was around 30 weeks and that I would first need a new GP referral. I had already been using olive oil for 11 days without improvement.
My GP responded promptly and arranged for a district nurse to visit me at home. She found a build-up of wax. Following her report, however, I was prescribed oral amoxicillin and antibiotic ear drops for a presumed infection, without my GP examining me directly. I am reluctant to take antibiotics unless they are genuinely necessary, so I searched online to see whether microsuction could be done at home.
That is how I found Auris Ear Care.
For me, the home service was particularly important. I cannot simply get in a car or use public transport across London. Auris offered a next-day home appointment with an ENT-trained doctor, so I bit the bullet and paid £250. It was the first time in my life I had paid privately for medical treatment, and as someone who strongly believes in the NHS, I had mixed feelings about doing so.
As far as Auris is concerned, though, the service was excellent.
Dr Riaz Rampuri arrived exactly when promised. After a short consent form and medical details on his iPad, he performed microsuction on both ears. The actual procedure took only a few minutes in each ear. Everything was calm, professional and straightforward, and I could pay by card using his mobile payment system.
Most importantly, the problem was completely resolved. Dr Rampuri examined my ears and confirmed that there was no ear infection, so the antibiotics I had been prescribed were not needed. Two days later my hearing remains completely normal. I can even listen to the television at a noticeably lower volume than before.
So this is very much a five-star review of Auris Ear Care and Dr Rampuri. They provided exactly the service I needed, in my own home, promptly and professionally, with an excellent result.
The experience did leave me with uncomfortable questions about NHS access to routine microsuction. A procedure that took only a few minutes and immediately restored my hearing apparently carried a wait of many months through my local hospital service. It does make me wonder whether access to NHS microsuction is gradually becoming more restricted.
I was fortunate that I could afford £250. Many housebound and disabled people could not. That wider issue is not the fault of Auris Ear Care. Quite the opposite: I am extremely grateful that the service existed when I needed it. Dr Riaz Rampuri solved in a matter of minutes a problem I had been facing the prospect of living with for months.
Excellent service, and one I would use again without hesitation.
