Types of ear infections…
Outer
Inflammation of the ear canal skin, typically caused by bacteria and fungus.
Middle
Infection located behind the ear drum, which is more common in children and associated with upper respiratory tract infections.
Inner
Located in the deepest part of the ear and is commonly caused by viruses which damage the internal hearing mechanism
and nerves.

Outer ear infections can manifest in three different ways:
Otitis Externa
Furunculitis
Perichondritis
Treatment includes antibiotic and steroid drops, pain relief and keeping the ear completely dry, even in the shower! Often, to allow the antibiotic drops to work, the ear canal first needs to be cleaned of debris. This is done using microsuction. Occasionally, if the ear canal is very swollen, a small sponge (aka pope wick) is inserted into the ear canal to help draw the antibiotic drops into the ear. Sometimes, if Otitis Externa or itchy ears becomes a recurrent problem, your doctor may take an ear swab to find out the type of infection.
For the treatment of Perichondritis or Furunculitis a combination of oral and topical anti-biotics is used, as these infections are usually more aggressive.

Middle ear infections (Otitis Media)
These infections cause pain, earache, fever and sometimes discharge if the eardrum bursts, releasing pus into the ear canal. Often the pain and symptoms get better after this, and usually the ear drum will heal normally. Longer term problems can occur when there is a hole in the ear drum (a “perforation”), or fluid (“glue”) that collects behind the eardrum. These problems often require a referral to a hospital ENT doctor as these problems can cause hearing loss and perforation (hole) can get infected. We have close affiliations with trusted ENT Consultants in specialists London and Home Counties hospitals which can help with a referral if required.
Most acute middle ear infections settle without any ear infection treatment, such as antibiotics. Rarely, complications can occur where the infection spreads to the bone behind the ear, causing a condition called mastoiditis. This is a medical emergency and any patient with mastoiditis should be seen and assessed in an Accident & Emergency Department.
Inner ear infections (Otitis Interna)
They usually get better on their own within a few weeks. The most common symptoms are: dizziness, feeling unsteady and off balance, hearing loss, nausea or ringing in your ears (tinnitus). If you suspect you have an inner ear infection, we can recommend an ENT Consultant to investigate further.

Emergency ear infection appointments are for patients who need urgent care because of ear pain, discharge and hearing loss. If you have developed an ear infection on holiday, we can organise for an ENT doctor to provide treatment on the day of your return.
The cost for an emergency ear infection treatment appointment is an additional £175 to the standard fee.

Ear Infection Treatment
How do I know if I have an ear infection?
Ear infections present with symptoms of pain, discharge and reduced hearing. Occasionally, you may also experience itchiness, added sounds. In severe infections your ear may become visibly swollen and you may feel fatigued and feverish.
Can I fly if I have an ear infection?
This depends on the type of severity of the infection and how comfortable you feel. It is best practice to get your ears checked by a specialist prior to flying, who can treat you and advise if travelling is appropriate.
Will my ear infection resolve on its own?
No. Mild inflammation/irritation can settle on its own, however an ear infection typically requires treatment with antibiotics or antifungal medication.
Can you provide medication to treat the ear infection?
Yes. Our ENT doctors can prescribe and therefore there is no need to see your GP.

How long is the ear wax removal appointment?
Usually no more than 30 mins for both ears to be checked & cleaned. If the appointment is for a child, please allow up to 60 mins.

If you cancel within 24 hours of your appointment you will be charged a rebooking fee of £100 on your next appointment.
Can I claim your fees against my medical insurance policy?
It depends on your insurer. We do not take payment from insurance companies. You must check with your insurer that they will cover your treatment by the clinician you are seeing.
